Wondering whether to quit your job? Seeing a career change as a sign of inner transformation can be useful.
Are you wondering “should I quit my job”? In this blog post I explore how inner transformation is connected to your career decisions so you can find clarity on whether it's time to leave your job.
During our first session a client tells me he’s unsure if he wants to stay at his job. He’s been wrestling with this idea for weeks and despite lists of pros and cons of leaving, he was nowhere near finding the clear decision-making he was desperately looking for. I offered a different approach: exploring the decision by interpreting the messages that his body was sending him. We soon discovered that for him, changing careers held a deeper meaning, and through this, he found a clear way forward.
Having coached for hundreds of hours, I’ve found that for many clients changing careers is more than just about that - “what new career should I pursue” can really be about: “who am I now?”
Is it time for a career change?
If you and I met, and you told me that you’re considering leaving your job, the first question I would ask you is what has changed?
Inner transformations and career changes - have you changed?
Life's monumental shifts, such as becoming a parent, losing loved ones, going through the global pandemic, or relocating to a new place, can profoundly transform us. Simple moments of awe or a series of small changes can also have a cumulative effect. COVID-19 was one of those monumental events, perhaps the drop that broke the camel’s back, spurring millions of people to leave their jobs during the Great Resignation of 2021. Finally, if we have been investing in our wellbeing and healing, this inner transformation can lead us to changing how we see the world. Here are three ways in which inner transformation personal can impact our feelings about leaving work.
Shifts in perspectives and values. In inner transformation coaching, we harness the potential of interoception and somatics to engage in a meaningful dialogue with the body, allowing us to gain insights into the shifts that have occurred within your system. Through this process, you can pinpoint if external (or inernal) changes have impacted your values or way of life and understand how these transformations may impact your career. For instance, after becoming a parent, I no longer found the same drive in my career; my motivations evolved to prioritize family, presence, and savoring life.
Deeper inner awareness. Conversely, these shifts, particularly inner transformational work, may serve to unveil deeper truths about your innermost Self and its longing to express its purpose. It becomes apparent that our current career path may no longer align with this newfound clarity, prompting us to consider a more authentic direction.
Inner growth. Change is a powerful catalyst, capable of not only reshaping our perspectives and values but also fostering personal growth. As we evolve and expand as individuals, there comes a point where we may feel like we've outgrown our current job. This sense of outgrowing is a natural consequence of our inner development, urging us to seek new opportunities that align more closely with the individuals we have become. It's a testament to our ongoing journey of self-discovery and transformation.
And also… has the organization changed?
Organizational changes can also trigger the desire to seek a new career path. If your personal transformation has been relatively stable, it's worth examining whether your workplace has undergone significant shifts.
Examples of organizational change: Changes in leadership, mission, or the overall organizational climate can all influence your sense of fit within the company.
Should you quit your job?
So, should you quit your job? I would advise you to assess what changes have occurred in your life and within your workplace over the past few years. Pay attention to both major shifts and seemingly minor yet impactful moments. Reflect on how these changes have altered your values and your vision for your life, or if you have grown. Next, consider whether your workplace can adapt to accommodate your evolving self, or if you can adapt to your changing work environment. If the answer leans towards a “no”, it might be time to start exploring new horizons.
Exploring the Beauty of Transformation
Navigating the decision to leave your job can be a daunting process. I encourage you to embrace all your feelings as valuable teachers. Your worries can guide you in crafting a plan for the future, should you decide to make a change. Additionally, I invite you to seek the beauty within transformation – view it as a mirror reflecting opportunities for self-understanding. Questions like "What is alive in you now?" and "What are you grieving?" become powerful and insightful inquiries that can only be answered through lived experiences of change.
When we work together, our journey encompasses not only the decision of whether to leave your job but also the exploration of what is shifting internally. This process extends its benefits beyond your career, rippling into other facets of your life, fostering deeper self-awareness, and empowering you to make choices that align with your evolving self.
